Kitchen Makeover Plans

We are taking this 50's oak kitchen and creating an ecclictic old-world feel with deep colors, brass accents, and rich wood tones. The only things that will be the same are the countertops and the retro oven. As you can see below, all of the items are original except for the new laminate countertops and sink. When we walked through this home, I knew this was a perfect blank slate. There is nothing I need to "feel bad" about changing or painting. The only two things I liked about the kitchen were: 1. The scalloped trim above sink and 2. The curved peninsula. Both of which I am keeping!

Before

I know, i know.. we bought that orange kitchen!

I love the color green, so I knew that was the direction I wanted to go with this kitchen. I wanted it to draw you in and feel cozy. The green I picked does just that. The green is really the star of the show but I wanted to bring in a unique brass backsplash to bring patina and some reflectiveness to the space. With this being a eat-in kitchen I wanted it to be a place you wouldn't want to leave after dinner together, which is why we are putting in a beautiful velvet banquette in the dining area. It's going to be the favorite spot in the house I think!
For my inspiration, I looked to deVOL because they are the masters of the English kitchen. You can see two of their designs on the bottom left below.

Material selections

I'm mixing metals in this kitchen, which isn't something people think of doing regularly but I think this gives a kitchen more lasting power. It elevates it to not feel stick in a certain trend of a time. Afterall, all metal finishes are beautiful and they just go in/out of style like jewelry. I found vintage brass hardware on ebay for the cabinets, just enough for what I needed! And that with the green paint set the tone for the rest of the selections.
  • Backplash: this is a diy that I will share when done. Essentially it’s using brass shim stock applied to a wall, and sprayed with vinegar to get a patina. Because I wanted this all along, I knew I was looking for darker-aged hardware for the cabinets for depth.

  • color: north woods by behr

  • flooring: Marble peel & stick tile using traffic masters white marble & black marble from home depot

  • Lighting: I like a lot of different styles of lighting and my philosophy is if i truly love them all, then they work together. I know that isn’t how everyone feels but it’s my home afterall ;)

  • Sink & faucet: I’m going with a white sink since that will match the countertops better and a brass faucet because that will be best with the backsplash.

  • Fridge: I am hoping to get a black vintage inspired fridge. Still figuring out which one I want!

  • curtains: I bought this indian block print fabric in paris and am having my mother in law sew them into curtains for below the sink and cafe curtains in the dining nook. These are just the cherry on top of the kitchen design!
